What to do with the uglies....

I have scrounged a few cords but it is wood that has already been cut in sections that are small and thin. It does not stack well at all after it is split. I have several piles of this stuff and can't figure out what to do with it??? Obviously I will burn it but it is really messy and cramping my wood piles style. Anyone have suggestions? Pictures?

A friend gave me some 55gal blue plastic barrels. I cut the top out and throw the uglies and cutoffs in them and stack them up in the shed.
Not the best way of doing it, but works for me.

I make small short stacks
Burn for shoulder season.
I use some for the outside fire pit too.

Barrels are fine but add some ports to the sides to aid air flow. I picked a couple wire cages apx 4.5x4.5x5h toss ugs in those.

The uglies go on the top of my stacks.....usually end up in the firepit, but not afraid to throw them in the stove

I give them to neighbors when they want just a" little wood for the weekend" thing,

Some neighbors who have fireplaces and ask for a small bit of your wood. They don't burn regularly but want some on hand if power goes out. They see my stacks and think "geese, Gark, are you getting ready for the end of the world? Can I have a bit for emergency?". They get uglies. It costs them beer or something.

1. Throw on top of the stacks . . . burn first in the fall when you don't need to pack the stove to the gills

2. If there is space between double rows . . . toss between the two double row stack

3. Toss into a big pile and designate this as your campfire/burn pit pile and burn as needed.

4. Lay one pallet down, nail or screw three pallets on to the side of the pallet effectively making a three-sided box. Toss uglies or chunks into the pallet . . . stacking a front "row" to hold the wood inside as it starts to mound up.

May I ask where you got or how you made that cage? I tried to make one with no posts and plastic fence, but that didn't work. Don't have as many uglies this year, though I do have some.

At the end of each row (5-6 cords), I make a 40" square bin from pallets, and "stack" all the uglies in there.

I stack them in between my "nice" rows. You never see them that way, and it makes the "in between" row a little more open and airy, being that the uglies don't stack so nice.........

I make two special racks (side by side) with 2x4s on the bottom and one row of really long (regular) splits on the bottom as a base, and then stack up the uglies on top, jig-saw puzzle style. It takes a long time but its sort of a fun challenge to see how high and stragiht I can get the ugly stack. I will add a picture this weekend.

Uglies bin:
Put a pallet on the bottom of this compost bin & you got an "Ugly's bin"

Bins: I got them from a craig's list add, dirt cheap, new they would be in the $500 range. You could call them parts bins, extra gaint size move them around with forklift or pallet truck.

I tend to leave them in the woods these days just because I don't have a lot of space on my property. The few that remain get put on top of the wood bins and wood stacks to get burned first.

throw them on the top of the stacks .. when its cold and there in the fire burning = there not uglies , there heat .
