WHY DOES A STOVE BACKPUFF?

Or at least sound like its puffing? Is it because the fire itself is asking for more oxygen than can be provides?
 
Yes, I stumbled on that doc a while back. It's quite well written and comprehensive. I've sent a request to the author to reproduce it here on Hearth.com. Unfortunately the two email addresses I used to contact them bounced. The article is from 2005. Anyone know if the Sunworks Energy Centre in Hawkesbury, Ont. is still open?
