Wood Estimation

Any estimations how cords of wood this might be? The backside of this pile is equal in size. There are some very big rounds, too big to lift. Also anybody with good eyes that can ID wood?

My guess is maybe 2 cords. I see some ash and maybe maple. Not very good with the ID game. Good score. Tree service (wood fairy) drop off?

Agreed on the Ash and Red Oak. And yeah, we need some split pics and more bark pics on the other stuff. If you're lucky, it's Sugar Maple. Stuff is as good as Red Oak.

Piles are tough to judge, pictures of piles are no easier.

I hear ya, piles are hard to judge. The pile is taller than I am.

Here is the other side and I have removed some of the smaller rounds before this pic. I'm standing slightly up hill. I'm off to get some splitting done

Not to be too critical but whoever cut this needs to measure a little more carefully. Some stuff too long to fit in any indoor stove and some well under 1'. Sometimes we all all forced to cut short lengths but these seem consistently inconsistent. It will all burn equally well, just more work splitting & stacking.

Typical tree service load. My guy thinks firewood length is 24-28" but some are as short as 12". Not that I can do much better.

On a related note... Is here a convenient way to estimate how much cordwood will come from logs, based on diameter? 10" gives X cords per log-foot, etc I'm busy pulling logs from the woods and want to know when I have enough before I start splitting as the plan is to rent the splitter once and get-er all done at once.

Some logs are 1 foot long, most are about 22 inches, and there are a couple 2-3 footers. No biggie. Most diameters are about 25 inches with some smaller stuff here and there. I've come across a few really punky rounds, which i'm tossing to the side and will use in bonfire season.

2 hours into splitting. I have a nice split pile and the round pile hardly has a dent in it The new splitter is churning through everything no problem

Where do you get an Ariens splitter from?
Looks like it goes vertical and has a tongue jack.
I was guessing 2 facecords but now Im thinking it might be closer to a cord. I like to err on the skinny side.

Beer break. I am splitting on the pavement, the round pile is where the dump was left, and i'm tossing the splits onto the grass to make the pile. . Still need to be able to access the driveway if I dont get it all out of the way today.

The splitter is from HD. Yes it goes vertical and horizontal.

Well after 12 straight hours of splitting I am beat! Did some major damage to the pile but I still did not get it finished. Almost got there, but it got dark out. Now I have 2 piles on my lawn. lol

And here is what I have split. The pile is WELL over 6 feet tall.

I sure hope so! So who was saying 1.5 cords? lol.
Yes I split for 12 hours, and I'm still hurting. With a few small breaks in between, but it was pretty much nonstop morning to dark. I did another 2 hours this morning before work, was able to add to the pile. I mostly added to the rear of the pile, which can't be seen in this picture, to keep it from overflowing into the driveway. I know its hard to scale a picture, but each split piece of wood averages about 20 inches or so. The pile is wide, deep, and tall.

I still have some more to get split, but the next challenge its carting all this wood to the OTHER side of the yard to get it stacked up.
