Craigslist late night score that was said to be maple. Heavy as all get out. My fiskars bounced off of this stuff withoiut making any headway. Took out the splitter today and it basically tore apart as opposed to split apart. Grain was going in all directions. Wavy grain patterns throughout the entire load. Seems pretty dense and definitely has some weight to it. Is this maple? I have some maple (sugar I believe) that split right up. Who knows what this is?

I guess it'll give some btu's. created an entire pile of uglies out of some very nice looking rounds. Thanks for the input.

Red Maple with a dark center? I would guess a piece of Shagbark Hickory with not particularly shaggy bark, except the dark center seems too small for a tree that size.

Soft Maple for sure, Final answer.

I also vote - shagbark hickory. Looks just like the one I split this summer.
