Have had a couple of days almost hit 80! But today the wind is hauling, it has been in the 40's all day and the stoves have been going since last night. Cozy in here and that's the way we like it. It will be HOT outside soon enough. Personally, I prefer winter. Yikes, that ought to get some comments. :cheese:

Still burning here, it was 23f yesterday morning, mid 40s this morning with 30 to 40 mph winds, just had a back draft which set off smoke detectors. We had a day in the 60s last week and we had a day in the 70s a few weeks ago. Not much snow left, alittle on the north side of house and some in the woods but for the most part its gone. Its been a long winter, most snow I've seen on the ground here, over 3 feet for months. Absolutely no frost any place covered with snow. Generally here on the coast we get some rain in the winter not this year, we had snow cover from dec to april 5th or so. Including 14 inches on April fools day

I almost slid off the road going downhill on an intersection 3 miles away from my house on April first. The hill is always tricky but the combination of warmer roads and snow cover was deadly! I was thinking what would be better going off the road to the left and getting stuck on a stream culvit ditch that dumps across the street in the reservoir or just sliding down the hill into the intersection and potentially hitting oncoming traffic. There is not much traffic at 6am but plows were driving through the intersection and they had the right of way and the stop sign was on my side of the intersection, so that would have been a bad idea. getting T boned by a Mack truck armed with a giant plow would have been no joke! I was able to stop just at the bottom of the hill and regain control enough to turn the vehicle to the right, which was the way I wanted to go anyway. It was a close call though, and sort of felt like someone was looking down on me and saying "April fools!"
Yesterday, we had a fire going all day and my wife loaded the firebox last night for an overnight fire. This mornig came with warmer outside temps in the 50's and I let the stove go cold as the house was 71 when I got up. It is still 69 right now and I don't see a fire being needed today! But we still have a little bit of wood to burn in case we need to take the chill out of the house. As May approaches, our days of burning 24/7 are gone, but the occasional fire will sure be lit until the end of the month. Spring is certainly welcome around here, this winter was really harsh here in Mass.
Hate to say it, but La Nina hasn't left us. We're still running about 10 degrees below normal. Hope this doesn't continue through Juneuary again this year.

Had fires the last two nights. Here's hoping they were the last ones. I am moving two years worth of wood into the shed and ready to be done with it for the season.
Still burning here and it looks like it will continue for a bit longer. Supposed to be low 30's tonight and tomorrow night, Tuesday night looks like it'll only get into the 40's, after that it looks like we'll be trending in the right direction.
Took my ten year old son on his Tenderfoot outing with the Boy Scouts this weekend. Twenty boys in a big
uninsulated cabin with bunk beds and a beat-up, cobbled together half-working wood furnace for heat. The
scoutmaster, a friend familiar with my burning proclivities, put me in charge of the heat.
We got in Friday night after dark with temps in the 30's and cold rain/snow. I'm trying to figure out this wood furnace.
First thing I notice is that the the controls are missing. There's a hole where they're supposed to be and no way to
regulate the draft, except for cracking the door open. I got the wood charred, filled the firebox, and shut the door.
Lots of smoke coming out the chimney and not enough heat. Also, unfortunately, after the fire started, the blower
ran for a minute and then shut off for a minute for most of the night. Woke up to a continuous blower but the blowing
air was cold. The coal bed was cold enough to touch, so I unplugged the blower and went back inside my warm
sleeping bag.
On Saturday morning, I have a good look at the available wood. It's wet oak and very recently split.
Finally got the damn thing started with lots of newspaper and blowing. Plugged in the blower (it stayed on, yeah).
Spent the remainder of the weekend feeding it wet wood and eventually getting the cabin up to reasonably comfortable
temperatures. Burned a lot of wood to make it happen. Got up several times in the middle of Saturday night to reload.
Back home this afternoon to my cold house (furnace at 55). Soon had the Isle Royale cranking on three year old hickory.
With the weather forecast (snow tonight and continued cold), I'll be burning for at least the rest of this week.
But I'll say a little prayer of thanks tonight that it'll be with the Isle Royale, dry wood, and easy overnight burns.
It was a fun weekend--filled with knot tying, orienteering, fire starting, flag ceremonies, first aid, and knife care.

That would probably be a good idea, although it didn't get done. It was a very short
chimney run with two different types/sizes of black pipe before hitting the ceiling box.
I should have volunteered that service to the camp's caretaker.

Ground was white with snow yesterday but it melted. So we start today with a fresh white ground..... This is April....I think.
Still burning here, Sat got about 4-5 inches of heavy wet snow.
Snowing again today and supposed to snow off and on most of the week.
Lows in the 20's highs in the 40's.
But, I do have to admit it is much better then the highs in the -teen's and lows in the -30 range that we had during the winter.

Not only 10 degrees colder than normal but we had just about an inch of snow this morning. Nice. We now have the worst of both worlds, warm enough that the grass needs to be mowed and cold enough for snow. As far as burning, it is too cold to burn all day so I get to start two fires per day. Shoulder season in the northwest means big temp swings in the house.

ended up with about 6" yesterday...snowing and blowing all day...no, it did not melt away...still here this a.m....how could it melt???got down to 0f last night

Still burning . . . usually one in the morning and one at night . . . I have had a few days when I was lucky and just had one fire.

Feeling the Heat
yep - I tossed a couple into my 13NC last night and watched the secondaries until I dozed off.
It was damp and chilly in the house.
This has been a very long burn season I think I did at least 3 1/2 cords.

We've been each usually having a fire at night for the past 2 - 3 weeks A few nights, the Dixette didn't even bother. Odd, for some reason with night time temps in the 40F ish range, the PE does the job with 2/3 - 3/4 full load at 10:30 PM ish.
Got really, really lucky, and got a cord of PRIMO WOOD for $180 2 weeks ago. And no, this time I ain't telling where I got it from. Cause there is more >:-(

Update on the indoor temp: 73 right now! Lit a fire this afternoon, 15 minutes later damper down and had a glowing cat a few minutes later. Late April and still thanking my lucky stars we have a nice wood stove in the fireplace!
