I have a late 80's VC Federal catalytic convection heater. Bought it used and it needed a combustor. Decided to try it without one as it is the extra large one and our home is small. Been running it that way ever since. How much hotter will it get with one and any suggestions on a reputable online source to get one and other parts ( also needs the baffle that anchors directly under the combustor) Also, (this may be a dumb question) does the combustor increase burn time at all or significantly increase pipe temp? Have been seriously considering replacing it with a Hearthstone Heritage. Any thoughts appreciated. Thankx

Yes the Cat will truly improve performance out of that stove. Its intended to be burned with the Cat. That stove can give you up to a 10 hour burn time when its in working order. It is a big heater eqal in heating to the VC Defiant. Any local stove shop should have a Cat. That model takes a 6" round with an interam gasket to go around the Cat. The heritage is a nice looking and great performing stove. I would see how much work the DW truly needs, and if its just too big for you.

Heritage is also big dollars vs a lot of other stoves - not sure where up-front cost stands on your list of priorities...

Thankx for the replies. Any thoughts on stovepipe temp when burning the stove as it was meant to be (with combustor) We are using a single wall 8" black pipe that is at clearance borderline. Will combustor increase pipe temp, and if so, enough to warrent going to 6" double-wall pipe? Thankx again Strawman
