I am building a tank in tank. I am pulling water from directly above the firebox. I am returning it on the side about half way up the tank at the back. I am adding an elbow to the inside of my return that will direct the return water to the back bottom corner.

I was wondering about adding a pipe inside the tank that would run next to the firebox and go from one end of the tank to the other. My thinking being that the water heating up in that pipe would then push out the ends and help circulation.

Ideas?

I'd run either the supply or return all the way through to the other side to force complete circulation if possible.

Here you can see my supply and return ports. The supply is the top pulling straight out of the back panel and the return is the lowest one that extends into the water jacket about half way. There's a set of ports on the left and right side of my boiler. I pulled from the left supply and returned in the right return. Always gave me pretty good mixing inside the boiler.

If you pull supply from about 4-6" below your water line try to return the water in the most opposite side at the supply. So basically run a tube all the way to the front bottom if your supply is rear top.
