I've started up my Earth OWB for the first time with some well dried hickory. There really is not any real smoke coming out the chimney. You see a little and the heat signature.

I've thrown in some green ugly sycamore and it chugs out the smoke.

I was worried about the smoke and neighbors but with dried hardwood I'll have no problem.

As a bonus-- the heat from the vents cannot be compared to the heat I was getting from my heatpump. Why didn't I do this years ago.

The hard thing now is keeping that wood supply up so you don't run out of the primo dried hardwoods. Sure takes work getting wood that way, but it is worth it! Glad you tried it.

Keeps things simpler if the avatars are hearth/home related. This place is about info to help people do this burning stuff safely and easily. Same would go for nude avatars, violence, etc. Just not necessary here, but fine in the right place.

Any dry wood will put off minimal smoke. Even pine.

"But it burn too fast" I've had a lot of people tell me that when I ask them why they burn green wood instead of letting it season. Met a guy this week that bought a new cat stove and tried burning green wood in it without success, he took it out and put the old smoke dragon back in and went back to burning green wood. I told him to try some seasoned wood in the cat stove next year, he said he might.

That's what the firepit is for - fall weather, cool spring, even in a blizzard it is nice to build a fire in the pit, uglies go in there even if they do smoke a bit more. Nothing like burning in open air, get it hot enough and it will burn nicely. Absolutely not efficient of course.
