A friend in Germany is doing a renovation of a house they bought. This was the heating system for the whole house! It was built into a fireplace and is called an oil kachelofen. Looks like it vented into a heat exchanger that was surrounded by masonry. They are replacing it with a "pellet oven".

If it’s an oil heater as the name implies lots of constant btu output is available. Kuma makes a couple in the US and they look interesting.
 
Small firebox for heating the house. How did they move the hot air around?
Natural convection off of the masonry mass I think.
