I think I would tarp cover the rest of that wood and leave it for next year. See if you can find some better dried wood somewhere else.

Yeah that’s the plan, my guy I got some before with wood that he dries in some warehouse of his will have some ready January 1. I sweep my chimney myself so I’ll end up doing that around that time as well. For now I’ll burning this wood until his delivery is ready unfortunately, but I will be sweeping the liner again.

I believe people storing rounds are not lazy to split, but are not happy to stack for storage after splitting.

In Germany it is common to split in 1 meter (40 inches) length and temporarily stack for drying. These long splits are really easy to stack. Unfortunately 1m log splitters are not easy to find 2nd hand.

Much later they are prepared and cut twice to 13 inch length for stoves.

You know, I was wondering about that. Seems like most of the wood I have seen in Germany is stacked super long. The only reason I could think of was that it would stack better. You have confirmed this. While I get that it stacks nicer... the added handling of cutting it again seems crazy to someone who does not do it that way.

I hate shortening splits. When we switched from a stove that took 24"+ logs to our current stove which is happier with 18" splits, I had about 4 seasons of stacked wood to shorten. I made a rack to hold them while I cut the ends off, but it was still a pain.
