Largest Oak I've Ever Seen

Williamsburg VA, near the field where they do some reenactments. Some sort of oak. Can anyone guess the age? No signage.

I am no expert, but I cannot see how a tree like that could be under 200 yrs old, imo.

Looks like a burr oak. In the white oak family. I have a few on my property. Said to be very resilient.

Working on a monster myself now. 42" inch diameter! Took 3 Sunday afternoons to just get the limb wood home Naturally down in a tough spot as well. Grrrr. Neat to see. It was standing dead for several years. Red Oak.

IMHO more than 100yo.
I have a few on my wood lot smaller than that and property records suggest they're 90 y0 plus

thats exactly what i think every time i look at that tree. The things it's seen in its lifetime.

Yeah looks like swamp white oak or white oak. I don't think it is a burr oak by leaves and bark. Very nice tree. Looks like it should have many years left.

I have a large bur oak on my property that is very similar to that one, but larger. It was cut down 150 years ago and resprouted, then grazing and erosion exposed the roots just like yours. Estinated at 600 years old at least - it is hollow and impossible to core.

We had an expert from England look at our tree; he was fascinated and had information on similar trees. In the Queen Elizabeth era they would purposely cull oak trees as survey markers to get them to look like that.

It is a funny tree and am pretty sure I have seen that one. Kid graduated from W&M there and there are some live oaks there that are really old too. I am wondering if that is some sort of screwy hybrid...natural of course. Leaves look much like red oaks but the bark looks much more like live oaks with the smaller leaves. There are many big very old trees in that area for sure!!

Speaking of old strange stuff. This was from a 46" old white oak. This section was about 40' up. That is burl that grew in the center of a hollow section. It even has it's own bark layer that grew inside the hollow. Not burning that...

Omaha: Is this it, the Compton oak, (Quercus comptoniae) ? Purportedly a natural hybrid between Q. virginiana and Q. lyrata.
A couple sites mention that it was planted in the 1930's !
