So, the Jotul Rep was in the shop yesterday, and brought with him on his laptop a video of the new top loader in action, as well as some prelim pics of the finished unit... I tried to get some pics from him, but he was not forthcoming with them yet! The unit should be availiable by July/August. High points from what I saw:

The unit uses a swing away baffle (think Isle royal) but the swing away baflle swings out from the load area, making it easy to load wood in. The baffle is also cast iron = much more durable than the fiber board the quad uses.
Firebox is square and takes an 18" stick load east/west (when top loading) or 18" n/s when front loading.
Firebox size was a generous 2.4 cubic ft, just a hair under the oslo's capacity.
initial use of the unit gave them approx 10hr burn times
Steel box, brick lined, with cast accents and door for prettiness.
Open glass with no "gothic arch"
Ashpan.

Thanks for the update Summit, sounds like a great stove. Does it have burn tubes like the Isle Royal? I thought the Oslo's fire box was just about 2 cu ft, and this new stove comes in a little larger?

Oh, one other thing, is it a radiant or convection stove?

sorry, misprint, slightly smaller box than the oslo.. it is a burn tube unit, however: no cheap refractory, no junk inside. Its a combination radiant/convection as near as i can tell, it will have a opt fan. More specs will be avail this summer. Overall, I think It's gonna be another quality unit from Jotul - just like everything else they make. Keep your eyes open for it! I know we're excited to get some at the shop as we near fall.

So is it kinda like the PE T series with the steel box and cast surround?

similar idea, little different. Once we get the sales brochures on them, I'll put up a link for you all to peruse.

Nice to hear that Jotul is putting a new model out. An Alderlea style stove in blue-black enamel and top loading could be deadly. I'm sorry to hear they are not carrying through the family identity with the gothic arched glass frame. Do you know if the flue will be top exit only or top and rear?

i did not ask him about the flue outlet...

Dang, and here you got me all excited!

2.4 cu ft would be slightly larger than the Oslo I think. But it depends on whether one is measuring the usable space in the firebox or measuring to the limits of the door glass and secondary manifold.

I may have made a mistake, but measuring the usable space (just a rectangle, not all the way up to the baffle), I came up with 2.3 sq ft on an Oslo.

If this new stove can take 18" splits e/w or n/s it's going to have to be over 18"x18" square. I like the fact you can load it either way. Wonder what the clearances are? Any andirons?

I went through the jotul website trying to guess image names to see if they were preparing to post it. No go. I'm a loser.

Ahhhhhh . . . stove pornography. Can't wait to see the picture of this one.

Open glass with no “gothic arch”

the gothic arch is what makes them look so pretty. IMO

I burn myself enough side loading, cant imagine top loading being any easier. Can anyone point out the benefits of this besides the clearance issues of a side door?

I have used top, side, and front loading. I find top loading the easiest (and cleanest, no ash falls out from a top loader) for packing the stove full. Also, grab a pair of welding gloves and stop burning yourself. I have yet to burn myself on any of the three stoves I have.

andirons, yes... clearances i dunno yet

We haven't even had the Castine for a year yet...am I going to have to upgrade so soon?

Seriously though, sounds like a neat stove. Can't wait to see pics.

Steel plate stove from Jotul? While I like that you don't need to worry about leaky gaskets is this typical for Jotul to have the actual stove be welded steel and then attach fake panels of cast? Was it a double door unit like the IR?

Their fireplace inserts have steel boxes, sort of a cast/steel hybrid design. I'm not sure about some of their most modern European units, but they look like some might be hybrids as well.

Its how all their fp inserts and gas units are made. - this is a single door.

Clearances are a big issue, especially for corner installations. It's why we didn't end up with an Oslo. Jotul must have been listening.

Too bad about the 18". I have all my wood for 2012/13 cut to 20" for my new stove/root canal.

The Morso handles 20" wood?
