Well I completely removed the little brass filter. My cycle time is way faster now. I ran it for an hour and it ran perfect at a good speed. Still need to get a filter on there but as mentioned earlier in the post I've got new hydro fluid. I know I may risk the pump but wanted to give it a good run plus I had stuff to split! I will be on the lookout for an auto type filter. I could try to replace this one but honestly it doesn't look that bad unless it dirty and I can't tell. THanks for the help,

Well hopefully the fluid replacement takes care of the contamination issue. The can filters such as the one claydogg posted earlier is specifically designed for this type of application. Between the two you might just have the problem whipped. Lets hope.

not able to find that replacement filter pictured above. It looks like i should be able to fit the can style on there without any line modifications....may have a little extra in one hose but that will be ok. I'm going to take my original filter housing in with me so i knwo that the new setup will work with my valve and connections. Anybody know how bad it would be to keep running this without a filter? for the long term I want a filter but would like to be able to use it this weekend until i can get the part.
I don't have a filter on either of my splitters. I know. Gonna kill the pump - some day. I only run about 5 cords per year, but I have been doing it for quite a few years at this point. Buyer beware (or something like that).
That's a relief to hear. This splitter cost me 250. It's had plenty of use prior to my time and is finally running the way I want it to. For what I have in it I might just plan to keep fresh oil in there and run it. It's one of those things once it's working right just use it! I have done roughly 6 cords this year with it and plan to keep going so I will keep an eye on fluid and just plan to change it annually or so.

Hydraulic Pump - $100
If you have enough loose in your tank to clog the filter, you have enough to kill the pump. This should be a no brainer.

I think the filters on all the splitters I have used are the spin-on type, mounted at the tank on the return line.
A return filter and housing can be found at any farm supply store, NAPA, and many places online. The filter housing can be installed directly off the return side of the control valve.
Judging by picture number 5 in my first post . The inline filter looks to be on the supply line doesn't it? Is it ok to put a filter in the same spot?

Depends on the filter. Not all filters are made for a high pressure situation like that. Needs to be a specific high pressure filter.
I would just put a spin on one on the tank inlet, filter the return.

A filter should never be installed between the pump and control valve on a log splitter.
This setup was designed and sold at Sears just like this. With an inline filter before the valve connected to pump

You can't install a spin on style filter on the pressure side of the valve. It needs to be on the return.
ok, so i should probably just replace this one then. otherwise i'm looking at 2 new hoses, and some extra fittings. think i'll try to finda replacement filter jsut like this one so i can bolt on and go.
the current inline filter is on the pressure side of the valve.....it must not work the same as a spin on. i could leave it as is without a filter installed, and then put a spin on style on the return, but it would be hard to do unless bolted righted to the return with a fitting and then some how a fitting to get the large return hose over the new spin on adapter

i think rather than spendn early 100 to geta spin on filter, i'll just run this without a filter and when the pump goes, i'll replace it and freshen up the oil. easy enough.
