Red Oak?

I cut this downed tree up the other day in my normal go-to spot in the woods, this is unlike anything I normally get.

You got me too. It does look hard or your chain needs some sharpening. This year I too got into something I don't know what it is for sure. Where I go cut wood someone dumped 10-15 of what looked like some sort of fruit trees. Some of the pretty nice size. I thought, why not, fruit wood is usually pretty good to burn. I start cutting and it's some sort of Oak. Not Red, it's White but not like the White Oak I've had before. Smoother bark and looks more like Red Oak without the color. Nice surprise.

the inside looks cherryish. but the bark looks oakish.

I'm looking at leaves on the ground near the rounds. There are some Oak leaves in there with pointed ends..."Red oak has pointed leaves like the Red Man's Arrows...White Oak has rounded leaves like the White Man's Bullets". there are also Maple leaves and a few beech leaves as well. Whatever the heck it is, it's hardwood....split it, stack and season it and throw it in the stove in two years.

Looks like red oak to me, especially the 2nd piece bark.

I saw all the same leaves on the ground nearby as well.
get em split and the oak will give you some more clues, grain and smell may help next
no matter, it's going in the stove someday

Nice! Give that stuff a couple of years to dry. The logs are not heavy, all the water in them is!

Yep. It is Big Red.

Once it's dry that has some of the best BTU content you can find! Great haul for sure! Like other's have said don't try to burn it this year. It may have been "down" but it's not dry.

No doubt - red oak.

Still will need 2+ years CSS. Red Oak takes the longest to season as it is a porous wood. If you have space for it to sit for a few years then you have a winner.
