Hi all,

So I was going to go with the Jotul F600, however, when I mapped out the minimum hearth size with painting tape on the living room floor my wife and I both thought it simply takes up too much space. Plus it means removing our wood fireplace mantel which is original to the home, which although we were prepared to do it, we would prefer not to if possible.

So a rethink.....

The F55 Carrabbassett has
Smaller hearth size requirement 40"w x 33"d compared to 55" x 50"
Smaller clearances....which means I think we should be able to keep our wooden fireplace mantel now
Slightly higher BTU output 83,000 v 81,500.......basically we are not losing out on heat
Heats more space in zone 4.... 2300 sq ft Vs 2200 sq ft again nothing in it here

Bad points:
Log size 18 and not 24
No side door loading option
I think thats it...

Any thoughts... will get some pics up once I get it installed, I have pics of the room in another posting

Log size not a big deal for wood. Most is cut to 16".

Go for it, We love our F45 GREENVILLE

Hi Wolf Unless you specifically wanted the sideload (and that is a great option..) I think you will love the F55. Its only available in painted black as well, no enamel colors. The feedback is its a wonderful easy to use heater. Having the benefits of a steel stove in its construction, quick startup but the cast to temper its output, that is a great combination. Think you will love the stove. Good news is its less money too, another good reason to own one. Its become a good seller for us. Good luck with it.

We are getting the F55 as well. Almost done finishing our alcove and have a two year supply o wood waiting. Great whole house heater. Can't wait!

Well I finished the project. Ordered the Jotul F55 and chimney components. Should be burning in a few weeks.

Looks nice, what are the construction details? Metal stud framed? Were the clearances for an alcove install honored?

Yes steel studs, durock, 1" ventilation gap. Chimney will be double wall from stove to plenum then class a all the way up to cap.

Well, it's skirting the manual's alcove recommendations, but considering there are no combustibles in the construction...

It was a big job. I just went slow and did it right. I even ripped out the walls and replaced all the drywall behind it with fire rated SR which was overkill but made me feel better. Lol

I think you made the right choice. These steel Jotul stoves rock in the clearance dept. My F50 has been a winner. Only thing I dont like about it is that I sometimes get ash spill out the front when we have been burning 24/7 for a while. Now if Jotul would smarten up and do like Woodstock does, and do a steel stove line with both secondary air tubes AND a cat... we would have ourselves a winner for sure!
