I agree... they do look smaller, and I'm not sure why. In reality, they're the same exact size (29" wide x 31" high), within 1/4".

Maybe because they are black. Black recedes as a color, white comes forward. In astronomy this is know as irradiation.

LOL... so were the two Jotuls I had installed in this location! One was Jotul blue-black enamel, the other was Stovebrite Midnight Metallic, or something similar.

What about the fire box size? How do the two compare? I was trying to find the Ashford box size in the BK thread........forget it.....that thing is a size of a avg book!

Just shy of 3 cubic feet(2.75) for the 30.

Jotul > 3.0 cu.ft.

Jotul didn't actually publish their firebox size, but various members have measured and put it at 3.0 - 3.2 cu.ft. I suspect useable firebox was probably closer to 2.8 on the Jotuls, but that's arguable, and I haven't measured useable on the BKs.

Might get cool enough to fire a BK this week, if I can find time to pipe them up to the chimney. Been working very long days.

With your SF and layout I couldn't imagine one Ashford on a low setting running you out of the home on a cool night. Just remember though, if you load it "full" and run it low the majority of the burn those advertised burn times are no joke

Tried tonight, but ran into a chimney issue. Busy the next two nights, so I'm probably missing this little cold spell. Will probably have to wait 'till fall.

Got one stove hooked up. Straight shot, so no new parts needed.

Looking for a combination of elbows (30's or 45's) that will give me a 9" offset, for the other.

First fire... an ambitious move at 63F outside, but I figure I can open windows to alleviate curing paint stink, and it's headed to 43F tonight. Noticing it's pretty restricted, in that fire on a cross-crossed load of kiln-dried 2x4's dies out when I close the door... but it is 63F, so not really a fair test.



Taking off now, stovepipe at 475F, almost to active zone.

Yep. Gotta fire it up. Anytime I install a new stove or do flue work it is always in the Summer and it has to be smoke checked. Wife always says "OK. It is about to get hot in this joint.".
