So 6 friends are up in VT building a woodshed for the MIL. We got some great work done today.....we'll until my cousin decided we had one too many tree near the new shed. Don't worry though he is a trained professional.......we'll we have a few repairs to do......

Your cousin might have done you a favor (although he still deserves a beating). He clearly showed that supporting the roof off a pair of rafters was doomed to failure. You need a header running full length, under the joists and notched in to the columns. A good VT winter snow load with a little rain would have done the same.

I was wondering if I was the only one thinking that this woodshed was not built very sturdy ... like Charlie I too thought that this relatively small tree (from my perspective and the pics) should not have been able to wipe out this structure ... as mentioned ... better to find this out now instead of later when all the firewood is buried under 3 feet of snow.

Ugh..that stinks, but Charlie2 is right, those 2x6's need to be attached over a header for proper support and distribution of weight, A heavy wet snow (which we all get in the northeast) will damage the roof, At least the damage has been done with no one getting hurt, a little re-engineering work is needed, all your tools and labor are at the site still, and you all have a great memory and probably a good laugh for the holiday dinner table. BTW - the shed layout is awesome.

I had 5 cord delivered and its going to stack out around 8 I believe. Each bay holds 2.5 cords. I will definitely be buying wood from that guy again. The header is key. I haven't finished tally on the beer. We are still working on that around the fire right now. I wish I could say that the beer contributed to the tree incident. Thanks for the advice.

I'd say that is tremendous progress. In the bottom pic I see beer, fire, a quad, a log splitter, garden tractor, a rebuilt shed and a shirtload of wood.
