We have sellers here who short you or tell you they split at 16” and you get 20” pieces that don’t fit in your stove!
Indeed; us humans gots frustrations everywhere!

Here, in France, gov’t regulations are a curse and a blessing.

This last order I purchased in 2023, my wife and I didn’t understand the volume of firewood delivery is dependent upon how many cuts; the more cuts the seller has to perform, the less wood seller is required to deliver. So seller originally delivered 50 cm lengths and that would have equated to more wood…so I screwed up…AND, that first delivery was an awful lot of beech (darnit! Fooled myself again, doh!)

So, I was going to request 1 meter lengths next time and cut to fit myself…becuz, if a customer requested only 1 meter lengths will that buyer should receive the full amount of wood ordered! Now, I didn’t investigate if the seller would actually agree to deliver 1 meter lengths. Maybe some year.

My little Panadero takes 16.5” max (42cm)

Some big oak, cherry, and 1 split of ash for the night. Supposed to be on the warmer side tonight, probably won’t have to have a fire in the morning. Probably will be able to make it until tomorrow night. Cruising low and slow at 630 STT

Currently upper 30's, we've had a couple of warmer days... House is still 68 degrees from the morning load of pine and aspen. Will have a little fire later to fire up the charcoal and reheat the flue, then a cherry and black ash overnight load. Winter Storm warning going into effect at Midnight, but I suspect it will be much ado about nothing.

4 red oak, 3 hard maple and a chunk of spruce. Cold start today. Last load was yesterday am, a full load of spruce. I let it go out overnight as it was in the 50s. Today was 50ish as well. Cold front coming through tonight. Will see if I need to reload tomorrow as we will have the oven on all day for the turkey.

After taking care of 18” of snow we received I loaded up four splits or 25 lbs of red Oak on top of coals from 12 hours ago. Supposed to get colder with highs in the lower 20’s. Hoping I can hold on to my 12 hour reload schedule.

38/ 62 Cold start this morning. Pallet wood and some pine chunks for quick heating and coal bed. Lots of red oak in the rack after it coals up.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I see a hair dryer on the floor you must really be in a salon!💇‍♀️
Hair dryer is an integral part of my cold start process; hence I photographed it on purpose

Oh, I get it now…ha ha 😄
“Salon” in French language translates to “living room” in American English or “lounge” in his majesty’s English. Sure there is plenty of hair on the floor and a disturbing amount of cat fur throughout this dive I live in

I’ll be cold starting again in the next hour or two for Thanksgiving , so soon to post about that

Happy Thanksgiving y'all!

It's been wonderfully warm here this fall with the heat pump idling along. Last night was the years first fire, sticks and twigs. Tiny fire to drive moisture out of the soapstone. I would have done that earlier in the day but it was in the low 60s so figured it would have been near impossible to keep such a tiny fire going.

Tonight will be the first real fire, unless you count the smoker today for the turkey.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! Yesterday we had low 70s, front passed around 9p last night, scary wind blew its brains out all night, 39 at 6am going to 47 today or so...far warmer then most of you all. ...as I certainly didn't burn yesterday, last night I preloaded 2 larger splits of white oak and 2 smaller of red oak with red oak kindling, all stuff dry as a bone, lit it off this morning as house was 67 at 6a Love the controllable cold start burns..

It’s Thanksgiving! Who cares about the temps! We gonna have a fire! We’ll need it, cuz no solar today.

Well, seems I have a little bit of not fully dry oak and hazel kindling today…cold start was a bit more stubborn and smoky

Nevertheless, very little smoke in the salon and now roaring up to heat the place.

Our gas oven thermocouple failed last month. I replaced the thermocouple and then the gas valve solenoid failed a week later. Instead of throwing more cash at replacing the oven gas valve, we decided it would be smarter to go with a countertop oven. Well, crikey, the stores here in France are withholding stock to boost prices for Black Friday fake sales and the Moulinex 60L we have chosen is currently unavailable 🤦🏻. To bridge the gap, my missus bought an air fryer and she loves it. Frankly, the air fryer is awesome. My missus has been cooking everything in it: toast, cakes, casseroles, oven fries, anything. So, she has prepared the entire thanksgiving meal in the air fryer and the stove top! Obviously more cooking today. No turkey here, we gonna have duck (confit canard)

But, we have no way to keep the food warm; so the lowly Panadero is going to be today’s food warmer; we’ll be eating right next to the wood stove anyway.

So, the wood:
1 split chestnut/1 split beech
Siberian Elm/white oak/ hazel/ holly kindling on top

Currently looks like

Yep if I feel a draft in the morning inside my stove I use the hairdryer for 2 min. Better than a room full of smoke.

Have not burned in 2 days 50’s here and rain. Going to the low 30’s tonight. House was 66 when we got home from thanksgiving dinner. Cold start Loaded with oak splits and uglies. 675 STT. House 74 now.

Been using the mini splits more on the 40+ days. I try to save my wood for under 40. House is well insulated so don’t have to run them long.

37º here too, and Happy Thanksgiving! It was a good day. Had time to split a bit of wood while the turkey was cooking. Got 2 'bucket loads' a few weeks ago. 90+% of the wood needs to be split again, but most is quite easy.
