Not well. I haven't even put the new batteries in the truck (diesel) because I figured it wouldn't start anyway. I bought them, put a full charge on them in the basement, and there they sit. Hoping the wife's car starts on Sunday for Church...

-6 with -25 real feel. Nice coals this morning but not too much of a mountain. Aspen and pine runners n/s with black ash e/w. Coal management will become critical the next few days...
And a diesel at that! I'd love to have one, but as mentioned they have trouble in very cold weather. Maybe an engine block heater is essential in cases like this.

With Sunday's extreme cold (not as cold as yours) and pending significant snow coming here, need to have an ample supply of wood in the house.

Was -13 when I left the cabin this morning, don’t think it will get above zero today. Probably hit -30’s the next couple mornings. Wind chills are going to suck!

I’m going to strategically place my trailer next to some trees to catch them as they explode for firewood, no splitting required!
Wow - maybe a high of -1 ! I was going the suggest the same for the exploding trees - might as well gather the wood since it's semi-split or maybe with luck adequately split. Ideally it would be a dead/seasoned tree.

Goodness gracious y’all are facing extremes! Good luck

Over here in soaked French farmland, it mostly just gray…and plenty of rain

RealFeel is 3C/ 38F and staying similar tomorrow and then it will stop a bit

Today’s electricity shifter (cold start)

1 chestnut 1 holly

Oak/ hazel/ Elm kindling and starters

Block heater is standard on diesels (at least here).

Up to 0, real feel of -20. Might hit 1 yet... Third or fourth small load just went in. Doing surprisingly well with inside temperature. Tonight is supposed to be the worst of the cold, -30 temperature with -57 real feel is the latest forecast. Tomorrow's forecast HIGH is -11 real feel -27.

I restarted the stove at 5 with oddly shaped small splits of catalpa, one silver maple, and one red oak, and a handful of splitter trash.
Reloading with red oak somewhat curved and ugly splits. Lot of air between them.

36 outside, going down to 28.
70 upstairs.

I didn't think anyone bothered with that crap.....the Catalpa.

When I 1st moved here, it was early Nov and I was nowhere near prepared with wood supply. Friend of mine with a tree service, had 11-12 cords of junk wood in his lot. He normally stacked it in 3' lengths. perfect for a 40 plus inch firebox. That junk wood kept us warm all winter.
Soft maples, box elder, some other stuff not worth mentioning, and of course the catalpa. It burned hot and very fast. but didn't leave coals

I got a few rounds at some point from a tree that was cut down on a cemetery back in my scrounging days.
It's good fire starter.

But man, beautiful wood when dry. Silky brownish color.

-55!! Friday night has a low of -2 with a real feel of -25 here. Can’t imagine your temps out our way!

Wow, up to -11 ! Saw on the national news there was a forecasted and feels like low up in the northern part of the country that was pretty much lines up with yours. Good it sounds like you're maintaining inside temperatures with those extreme lows. If you can manage this, hopefully this is one of the coldest spells ever.

We're getting a decent snowstorm this weekend, but it's New England. The concern is for those in the southern areas getting snow and ice which isn't common there.

Every time I look at my weather app it drops the temperature and real feel a little bit more for the next 3 nights... Tonight now has a forecast low of -32 with a real feel of -62.

So I got the inside temperature up to 68 in the back hall, turned the thermostat up to 68 to maintain it, and am burning down coals for the overnight load. Once it's going I'll turn the thermostat back down to 66. I have a feeling that in the morning and tomorrow night the NG forced air may be needed again.

Overnight load will be cherry, white ash, ironwood and probably some other premiums like beech, hickory and/or sugar maple...

Never got to post this morning. Came home from work and gave it a full load of oak (first pic) that carried until about 5 pm. Then threw some cut offs on which got me to now. Mostly ash with a couple splits of oak. Work tomorrow again…of course with the coldest night yet 🙄

What happens down south will still affect the NE. During the winter, much of our food comes from the south. Especially this late in the winter season.

Absolutely!!!

I've seen this stuff milled. Slab wood with live edges. And yes, it was beautiful indeed. Unfortunately, none of it held together from what I was told a year later. I'm guessing it was do to the extremely soft wood. Or possibly the drying process was skewed. Wood like that would have to be done as slowly as possible. If it was stickered in the sun, and left there, I imagine that would be to fast a drying rate?

The old big bellied girl is feasting on norway and a split or two of sugar. I was surprised to find the sugar. Thought it was all used up.
Some white oak to accompany and a couple sticks of black oak. Last night was warmer like tonight. Temps hanging in the mid 20s.

I caught up on some much needed sleep last night. Now my sleep schedule so messed up, I'm wide awake. _g

Been a busy week and sounds like you guys down South are poised to get hammered!

34F here with 72F inside. Spruce is keeping the stove nice and toasty, and pushing the humidity out.

Last week I encapsulated a tritium vial on the needle of my flue temp gauge. Now I can actually monitor temps from my loft without using binoculars like a goober.

-22/-47 according to AccuWeather. At 11:00 the back hall was 69 degrees. Old man bladder just got me up and it was down to 66 and Great Room is 69. Fireplace still had 2 chunks with shape and small blue flames. Opened it up and poked them off to the sides and stuffed some cherry, birch and white ash in. Very hot coals. Even the gloves weren't comfortable reloading... If I don't have strong secondaries going the house is losing temperature.

That’s a great idea for your probe! Your not the only goober around here 😜 I’m going to steal your idea if I can find one.

With the impending cold front moving in the coldest air of the season I was prompted to reload the wood boxes with 3 year seasoned Locust..the BK Princess stuffed with Locust is a beautiful thing..the stove room is currently 75 degrees during the final coaling stage..I am getting ready to load the stove with Locust again and since i m not working today because of the temps I am going to have to find something to do inside today..
