14F out now, forecast to go down to 7F. Possibly the last of the single digit nights, looks like we'll have lows in the teens starting this weekend and another 1-3" of snow to go on top of the ice coating the ground. Seriously, it's been taking front loaders, pick axes, etc to dig out of this past storm. Fortunately we'd made sure to clear our driveway during the storm and right afterwards, lots of others are still trapped at home.

For tonight we've got a mix of black walnut and osage keeping the house toasty and comfortable.

Been burning a mix of cruddy box elder, cottonwood and coal the last few weeks as it’s been chilly here.

The ol’ beast really looks like a freight train when it’s huffing coal dust. After the initial burn cycle after loading it cleans up a lot.

-6/72 a few clouds rolled in, hopefully sticking around will keep the temps warmer.

Not liking this Maple I have. It doesn’t give off the heat my Red Oak does. I can’t tell if it’s red or sugar but I’m leaning red.

20 feels like 10, going down to 6 tonight outside. Upstairs 70.

The shorties of this morning were followed by a split of sassafras and a split of spruce.
Now a reload of mostly red, and one white oak splits,.and one half stick of mulberry to fill a hole.

Nice full firebox there!

I saved some more rectangular splits for tomorrow night when the low will be 2, the lowest so far this year. Hoping to get it even better packed then.
But I have 2.5" of ashes already so I need to clean that out sometime soon. Not tomorrow tho as the high will be 16

4 year ( 6/22) Locust. I stalled it and just opened the draft a bit more and it’s coming back. 1 minute later after just a touch more air. This locust needs a bit more air at the beginning but then gets very hot so need to be here to drop it down a bit.

Having a BK this (so much flame) seems so wrong .. irrational fear of "will I have enough in there to get me 7 hrs" :-)

It'll go on this setting tonight. Flue will end up being between 500 and 600 (what a waste...).
But the home will be warm.

We have a forecasted low of -8 without the wind tomorrow night, I’ll have to find some nice rectangle pieces to stuff in there for that. That will also be our lowest to date.

Back up and dialed down again. Will see if we stall again.I don’t think so but who knows.
Gonna leave it with the 2nd pic. Photo is way more orange that reality. It’s just marginal secondary flames.

Currently 0 with lows in the double digit negatives forecast. Tonight is cherry, white ash, elm and sugar maple. Highs have been single digit above 0 during the day. Like Todd said, highs in the 20's coming this weekend will feel like summer! Bust out the swim trunks and suntan oil!🤣

3:20A 11F outside and dropping to 7F, 64F inside

210F STT. Good coal bed after 5 1/2 hours.

Reload with 4 rectangles 18" long of 4 year seasoned locust.

3rd pic about 15 minutes in.

-18/70 full load of some semi punky Maple. One more below zero night tonight then it looks like back to normal. Quite the run of below zero weather the past couple weeks!

Still had a bunch of coals this morning, so put on a load of cut offs and a piece of pine I had sitting around and let coals burn down. Full load of oak, hickory, ash, sugar maple mulberry, and beech.
I’ve never had mulberry, I’ll have to be on the lookout for some. It looks like nice wood. I’m loaded up on spruce today.

-6 this morning yet. Aspen and some of the iffy black ash is in. Burning it hot with the air a bit more open than normal. Only have a few more pieces inside to mix in with other stuff, then the black ash will be done for this season.
