The real feel this morning was -1. 13 but high winds
12 hrs on that load. Now a split of sassafras,.and likely one more,.and I'll try to get some ashes out.

Forgot to grab a pic when I relit it this morning. About 12 hrs on the burn, STT was 160, had a few coals left to restart with some splitter slash and paper.

She’s running some maple, pine and a few pieces of poplar to warm up. STT 500 and climbing, air wide open. 18 outside, 53 inside.

Late to post this morning. Got home from work, cleaned out some ash, wiped the glass down and loaded up with ash, beech and some sugar maple and hickory . Burning 75% open for quick heat. Currently 13 feels like -8

Too much...... has been in my stove this year. I'm crushing the woodpiles.
Now i'm not even sure i'll have enough good stuff to burn this year. I'll have lots of will be 2 year (cut standing dead) for next year, But that was supposed to be for year 3 not next year. Gonna have to find some more dead fallen dry stuff pretty soon to help next years supply.

Maybe the 2 year oak will test ok after this summer?

Yeah I went through a lot more wood than expected with this last cold snap but I think I have enough sauna wood in reserve if I don't.

Usually my oak is good to go with two summers in the woodshed but I did run across some Maple that wasn’t quite there.

Probably the last load of the weekend, she’s been eating wood the last two days with these chilly temps and windchills.

I set the overnight load for tonight on today’s spruce coals. Mixed hardwoods in and charring. Low around 10 for tonight.

I had put in a 2/3 load of shorties around 11.15. That's done now.

Outside is 20, and feels like 10. Forecast goes down to 13.
Upstairs is 69.
Red oak, and the last half-stick of mulberry for the night.

At 10PM I put a single 3 inch split of maple on a thick bed of coals in the cookstove.. That will burn down enough in an hour to put in a couple of large pieces of maybe oak to get going and set for the night. I’ll reload around 3:00 or when ever I wake for a head call. With so many cold days and with nights hovering around 0 this last stretch, the heat pump is mostly turned off. Nice to see how well the stove has been heating our 800 ft2 first floor on its own despite its 1.2 cu ft firebox.

Recently got some advice here from bgreen and Burnin Since 1991 that has made a real difference. I stopped emptying my ash pan which stopped coals from dropping through the grate allowing for a thick and lasting coal beds. Now I just shovel out a small amount of ash at a time.

Dry wood! Near record low Feb 1 temps tonight. I don’t have time to think about species. Wil that fit N/S in the downstairs stove? Yes,No? Didn’t leave the sink dripping? Check. Do I have wood for the upstairs stove I side for the morning? No. uggg. Maybe I’ll find my slippers on the way to bed. Secondaries just lit off on the up stairs stove. I can’t find go to bed in 20 minutes. Downstairs stove is over 900 flue gas temps. That’s fine I just added two splits to a raging hot fire that was coals. I wish I had the finances at the time to buy BKs.

Bedroom hallway is 70. Living room 75. Basement??? Not freezing. Basement stove topped out at 954F on its way down now.

It at this point that I curse the previous owner who put in a 3 ton heatpump. WTF. It is a two stage. You couldn’t afford the 4 ton? Maybe spend less on the kitchen. No wait I like the kitchen and my stoves.

Both stoves will be easy relights in the AM. Duke sent out a plea to conserve electricity in the morning. Rolling blackouts may be a slim possibility. But our house won’t be cold!

Keep warm!

13/73 loaded up about 3/4 load of red oak. Teens for a high today then going below zero overnight. Forecast for Thursday says 30’s! It’s been awhile since we were above freezing.

Another load of the same this morning. Burning hot, house was down to thermostat setting of 67. I don’t think the blower has been anything other than max the past few weeks. 750+ STT does the trick.

Currently 15 feels like 10

Last night's load is done after 12 hrs.
20 outside now and it was windy all night. Home cooled down to 64... This morning we ran the mini split to give a boost. It was 14 outside and the home was up to 70 in 45 minutes.

Now a reload of some ash and oak uglies.
