A friend suggested adding a 4-way wedge to my Yard Machines/MTD 21-ton splitter.

Google suggests the COULD be done, but there is disagreement on whether the machine can actually push that wedge.

What sayeth the crowd here?

I have the big brother, the 31 ton MTD. I contemplated a modified wedge, but I can still split faster than my other half can stack so.....whenever it's time to re-fuel or take a hydration break, I help with the stacking. She does a good job, hasn't made a "bad" corner.....yet. :)

Would likely depend entirely on what you're splitting.

Knotty or gnarly - I would go single wedge.

Nice clean straight grained stuff, the 4 way might do good.

But if I did go for a 4 way, I would make sure it could be popped off quick to go 2 way - I doubt that ALL your wood wood split good with a 4 way, and being able to switch quick is a necessity.

I got a pop-on 4 way for my electric in the basement. Only used it a couple times.

Unless it is easy stuff, you won't have the power. And the easy stuff usually splits with a very short push, so not sure what you will gain for production.

My new splitter came with a removable 4 way blade. I thought it was great. I soon realised that if the cross is not near the centre of the round it can make a mess of the splits. I now only use the normal blade. I get more neat splits this way.

My son made this for our splitter. It will split the wood twice as fast as the thin wedge because the ram only has to travel about 1/3 the way into the piece before it splits wide open. No loss of horsepower and the slip on wedge can be removed for real gnarly pieces and then put back on in a sec. We usually put a small stick along side the small wedge to keep[Hearth.com] 4-way on MTD 21? [Hearth.com] 4-way on MTD 21? the removable wedge from rattling.
