[Hearth.com] Got some cutting done today
Got a little motivated today. My helpers and I cut up a cherry blowdown that's been in my back woods for almost 2 years. It was up off the ground so no rot. Figured I better get it drug up out of the woods before the rain Monday washes the snow away. Probably a little better than a half cord

Thanks, they are more helpful than my kids. My 17 year old son was in the basement working out with one of his buddies, I told them come out with me if you really want a workout! No thanks they said. Far left is our 15 yr old Retriever, then L to R is dad, mom and son, 3.5 yrs old, 2.5 and almost 5 months. Boxers are great dogs, the puppy even brought me a doe skull while I was cutting

There was a smaller tree under the blowdown in a crotch I had to cut so I could drag the logs up the hill with the quad. It was about 6" but the center was purple. Any idea what that could be? I should have snapped a pic, maybe tomorrow after work. There was no bark on it. Does Dogwood have purplish heartwood? I have a bunch of them growing where I cut the blowdown. There's one that is bent over and the top is touching the ground and the side is split out of it. I'll see if it blooms this Spring, if not it's going in the stacks

Awesome dogs, I have a soft spot for white boxers, makes me look over at my kids.

The last dogwood I cut had REALLY rough bark and a weird yellow/purple heartwood

Upon closer inspection the rest of the trunk has a bunch of dead branches that kinda looks like the few cedar trees in my woods. Could this be cedar? Just curious, as its a weird color, and it was much more "purplish " the other day when I cut it

That looks like Juniper.

Looks like it could be a Missouri red cedar. I've never seen a Juniper that the colored inner core was so large.

It was pinned under the crotch about 45 degrees. Not sure if that makes a difference
