I am an old fella with a new to us P&M OWB. Up until last year we had been heating with wood stoves, fireplace inserts etc. Electric backup... We are heating two houses and burnt about 8-12 bush cord total each year, depending on the severity of the winter.
A year ago we got a used P&M and hooked it to one house. So impressed that I am moving it over to where I can pipe in BOTH houses. Last winter I had a young tenant who didn't mind tossing around 30lb blocks but he may be leaving. I have cancer that has spread to some bones and are not supposed to lift more than 10-15lbs.
This getting old thing has been going on for a while and each year I refine my splitter a bit more until now I can reduce those 30lb blocks to 6x6 size with no problem.
I know that one selling point of the OWBs is the huge size of the fuel pieces, but am I loosing much by filling it with wood stove size pieces and just letting the controls do their thing? I know it won't boil over as long as I remember to close the ash drawer. Learned that pretty quick.....

By splitting smaller you are gonna have dryer wood...which will increase efficiency of your boiler. A lot of people leave it bigger just because it is easier/faster, but then it doesn't dry as well and any time you are "burning" moisture, you are loosing BTUs. So carry on.
My dad heats 2 houses and 2 large garages with one large Central Boiler...it works well, but eats wood like a feign!
PS, sorry to here of your health issues

Most OWB eat wood like a school of piranha on a feeding frenzy- too that end it will be interesting how the new EPA rules are going to effect that portion of the industry and what the fall out will be like.

Sorry to hear of your health issues. We are all getting older every day..some are just a few more days ahead.

Prayers sent your way for your struggles and pain. God bless.

Long time ago in a different life I had cardiac problems and was assured that I wouldn't make it to fifty years of age. Hitting seventy is a huge bonus...
We have a few friends with OWBs, and we have been heating with stoves and inserts up until last year when we switched ti the P&M. Could be wishfull thinking but I am sure we burnt less wood last year, just by the number of times I took the tractor to the woodshed....
