What type of work will you be doing in your shop. Indoor units of minisplits do not do well in a dirty enviroment. (saw dust, welding dirt/dust etc.) Have you given any thought to a small propane unit heater?

I installed the minisplit 3 years ago, this is an older thread. I don't run it if I'm generating dust, most of which I try to do outside anyway.
Get the install manual, not just the owner's manual. Most can be programmed to sense at either remote, thermostat, or head.
I couldn't see that in either of these manuals

That's surprising, but I guess that brand/model doesn't have that option. My experience is with several Mitsubishi units of various vintage over the last 15 years, and they have all had the ability to toggle between the head unit and remote thermostat, for temperature sensing.
Sensing in the head unit works for most applications, but there are some where I'd rather have the sensing in the thermostat. I also wonder how they manage to not have the units sometimes fighting one another in large installations with multiple heads, such as putting a half dozen units in a large room (eg. chapel or small gymnasium). In those applications, they will often tie multiple head units to one wall thermostat, to act as one coherent unit.
Well after almost 6 years the garage unit seems to have lost some refrigerant and it's no longer heating. I noticed last year that occasionally the outside coil would frost up and not go into defrost mode for what seemed a very long time but eventually it would defrost but never got around to investigating it further. Happened once this year as well, then yesterday I went out to the garage and no heat was coming out even though the outside unit was defrosted. Turned it off, and the circuit breaker as well turned it back on and it started to produce a little heat but the compressor was surging a bit so I shut it down. Ordered a 5lb can of 410a and a gauge, looking for a good 5/16 to 1/4 quick connect if anyone has a recommendation. Some of the ones on Amazon have bad reviews for leaking so I'd like to avoid that.

You don't need a core tool just to add refrigerant. Any adapter will do, if it's got good gaskets it won't leak.
True but I like the essentially error free aspect of the core tool and am willing to pay for it. I was traumatized by my previous experience of leaking coolant and freezing fingers
If there is a leak then that should be addressed. Flare fittings are a common location for slow leaks.
