Depending on your skills and your reliance on this stove, it might be worth ordering a new latch and nut, so as to not risk downtime if things don't go right while repairing this one. Shouldn't be more than a few dollars, I'd guess.

I have the the tools needed to get the job done. Def gonna order the item tho as mistakes can and do happen, Just curious that this has happened to me twice the first time tho i snapped the bolt.

I put the new style latch and wedge on my stove this season. I like it a lot more than the old style.

Yes, note that BK has updated the latch system to a flattened bolt/catch/latch instead of the round one you have. When you use the new flat catch you allegedly need a new wedge that goes on the door side. Not sure why though. Regardless, know this when you order.

Oh and that outside nut shouldn't seize up. It's just setting there in the relatively cool outside air with no corrosion or creosote to gum up the works. Mine backs off quite easily though due to the bend in the bolt I don't get more than about three turns worth of adjustment before I need to regasket.

Anybody using a digital CAT probe ??
I remember seeing one I thought was made by condare (sp ?), but when I went to their site it says, no information available when you click on it..
Also, would that be more accurate than the one that came with the stove when running the fans ?? My CAT probe will move almost a half an inch when I shut off the fans..

Wouldn't it be cool if the electronic thermocouple style cat probe, which should be more accurate with fans on due to no bimettalic spring, had a visible LED indicator that turned from blue to red when the temp hits 500? Visible from the couch?

I found it, it's made by CondarUSA, and it's called the Watchman..
Talked to a real nice guy named John, but he could not confirm if the hole for the probe in a King Ultra was big enough...
The probe needs a 1/4" min hole/well.......The probe itself is 1/4 ", to clarify..

Well, I can see the cat glowing from the couch on the Keystone...but that's a lot hotter than 500.

It seems to me that the cat should in fact BE cooler with the fan on. Cat gets hot, heats up convection deck, convection deck conducts heat away from cat. More fan, more heat conduction.

I am not trying to argue that the built in thermometer is a precision instrument, but I would think even a highly accurate digital probe embedded in the cat would also register a significant swing with the fans off or on.

Hole on my Princess is 3/8", I'd guess the King is similar.

I don't think so. The cat is burning smoke being fed to it, and will keep cranking at the same temp. Now with a 8" non-digital probe, it can pick up additional heat from the surrounding shields and steel, so the probe reading will drop. Same thing could happen with the steel close to the cat losing some temp when the fan's on but if you have a thermocouple probe that's just registering actual cat temp, I doubt you'll see much drop. I'm just guessing, though...

Fixed it for you. If the convective coefficient rises, and the heat generation is kept the same, the temperature will drop. The real question is how much it will drop. I can't say, but would be willing to bet that it's perceptible. The fan's effect on the convective coefficient is quite significant.

That makes sense. I wonder how much difference it makes? I figured since the cat is deeper maybe the heat pulled off wouldn't make as much difference, it it was pulled off above the cat, as in the Buck 91. I guess it would depend on the design of the particular stove as well. Alas, I don't have a thermocouple to play with...

Sure but then the magical thermostat feels the drop in stove temp and provides more fuel for the cat to eat and equilibrium is again established.

Me too. Humidifiers running around the clock and barely gets there. Sometimes.

But three years ago I went nuts because of a health problem and turned the place into a rain forest. Cost me a complete replacement of the the roof decking because of mold.

Anyone know the specs of the Ashford by-pass gasket? length, density, diameter. They are not in the manual that i can find. I think I want to replace mine. When i had it swept we did a dollar bill test and it seemed ok, but its beginning to sound less like a muffled "clunk" and more like a "clank"- if you understand that. I figured its a cheap (but kinda awkward) thing to fix.

says 5/8 high density.
