I'm a little surprised no one has though to ask the O.P. how old the stove is and how much wood has been through it. I know that the secondary manifold and air tube assemblies may wear out in the 500, causing an excess of 2ndary air to be introduced. This might cause an overfiring situation which would not be fully rectified with a pipe damper. So perhaps this will be helpful, perhaps not but at lest it's intended to be so.

Be advised too that the top is gasketed as well as the griddle, and if therre were leaks there it may also account for an overfiring problem in the 2ndary chamber.
