is it ok to use a stove w/ a bad cat?

like a Jotul 8?
just will use it for the spring season, don't need best efficiency, but don't want issues w smoke or poor burn either...
seller says ok as is..
 
Without the active cat to reburn the smoke the stove will burn dirtier and poorer.
