After home from dinner last night had some Jack Daniels beginning around 11pm. I treated myself to that, normally have a lower end bourbon. It was unsusual stoking the stove after that time until a bit after midnight, usually that's around 10pm at the latest. We stayed up until a bit after 1am, also unusual but hey it's New Year's. Woke up at the normal time though, a trend lately. It's all good though, my friend made a pot of Starbucks coffee (also a treat), wood stove is going and got a few inches of snow overnight.

Timing of the snow wasn't good for those that were out - started around midnight. I hope everyone is safe and had/is having a good New Year's!

About 12-1/2hrs on last nights burn, came out to a shop of 58 and STT of 240:

Enough coals to re-light with some wrapping paper and log splitter slash. Warming up with some hemlock and maple now.

2 degrees, -18 real feel. 2nd load of pine, aspen and black ash is in on a crap load of coals. Had the back hall up to 68 with this mornings load, but it dropped back down to 66 again already...
Wow, guess I got it easy! 20º, feels like -2. Got snow off the SUVs, shoveled a bit. Not enough for the snowblower. Did feel quite cold with the wind. A good day to have soup for lunch. Mid-upper 60s in a back hall must mean your main living area is quite comfortable.

Yes, generally 68-72 with the fireplace going. Back hall leads to the bedrooms and has the furnace thermostat. Bedrooms are a little cooler than the hall, but I prefer a little cooler for sleeping. If the furnace kicks in the bedrooms and back hall are 66 and the Great Room with the fireplace is a touch cooler if no fire is going, which works well... Fire it up and the coolest room warms up first.

That's the consensus - preferably a bit cooler in the bedrooms. Sounds like a good layout. My place, not really conducive to heating the whole house with a wood stove being a small cape.

My sister's place is designed for wood stove heating. A good sized colonial but the somehow the floor plan allows for their Jotul stove in the kitchen to do a good job heating the entire house. But some of that could be because it's a Jotul.

Yesterday's 15 min past midnight load is almost done. (Yes I was itching to go to bed...)
This morning it was 25 feels like 9 out. Blustery, windy, 1" of powder on the ground.
Currently 24 feels like 9.
I added a split of spruce on the coals.

Around noon I put 6 spruce on top of last nights coals. They’re still burning down I have the cart loaded full of hardwoods and inside warming up. It’s 19 out currently. I’ll reload around 830.

I've been home all day with the single digits. Been tossing oak and locust splits in. She's got a belly full of coals and keeps wanting more.
With the new year here, were getting closer. Looking so forward to this winter's end.

I did go outside to walk the dog. Was thinking of getting some wood in the truck for the lair. We came around the corner towards the woodyard to be met with the the wind chilled air.

Todays a good day for tomorrow. LOL

7:00 fireworks display in town, so we walked the Christmas lights display at the park in the 4 degree temperature before the fireworks (after walking our snow covered trails earlier in the day). Returned home to 71 in the Great Room and 69 in the back hall from the 3rd load of pine, aspen and black ash of the day. I did burn down the coals at one point with 2 loads of bark. Going below 0 again tonight. Will be more cherry, white ash and a premium or 2 again.

Our trails, maybe better photos for a "future work to be done" thread along with the tree's still down from the storms in June of '24. 2nd photo is the boss blazing trail, photo 3 is some of the older downed stuff on the hill behind the house, 4th is the new boardwalk framing buried in snow, 5th is a couple of the new tree's down (that I can't do anything about until I have access. Not carrying the chainsaw and gear 1/4 mile...). One pine fell in the back yard shortly after we went to bed and we heard it hit the ground. We both said at the same time "what the heck was that!?!?". I could see it out the window, nowhere near the house.

After another split of spruce and two 8" long uglies of oak, now a full reload.

An 8" square (I think), 18" long piece of maple.with mostly red oak on the sides (except for one white oak piece in the top right).

I'd weighed it when I split it out of the trunk and measured its moisture content at that time. Assuming all was as moist as that outer layer (an over estimation), it's current weight should equate to less than 20% moisture content. Given that the core of rounds neighboring this one was quite a bit drier than the outer layers, it'll be quite a bit less than 20% overall now.

It was 41 lbs 4 (I think) years ago. The last year and a half it only lost 1.5 lbs beyond what it had lost already, it's 29 lbs now.

Outside 19, feels as 10.
Upstairs 69.

13 feels like 5 here. 65 inside and climbing.

Don't know what I put in the stove last night? I thought it was oak, but I have 6 inches of coals in the stove.

Burning it down with a big old chunk of pallet wood (non cat stove) and a piece of oak.

We've had some minor snow over the last few days. Might have two inches on the ground.

The dragon has a severe case of ingestion. It was so bone chilling yesterday, (I never looked at the real feel), she devoured oak, and locust splits all day. Averaged 6-7 splits per feeding. GF must have gotten up at some point last night while I was out for the count. There's a bunch of mixed hardwoods missing that the dragon must have snacked on. Now she has a huge mound of coals10-12 inches high.

I leveled them out and tossed in 2 smaller splits of oak. Her breath is barely tickling warmth out the registers. After coffee I'll revisit her with some bark sitting in the lair and full draft.

Yawnnnnn......I'm tired.
Are we there yet?

I was up at 6 so came out for a cup-o-joe and see how the king was doing. 17 out last night so not too bad. House at 70 and I had the fan running at 30%. The center of last nights mixed hardwood load was pretty burnt out with nice blue flames dancing about. A few intact logs on each side of the firebox still. I closed the damper a bit and turned up the air some. I’ll do a late morning partial load of spruce until tonight’s reload. Looks to be cloudy with a high of 27 today. ☕️

Ended up letting her go cold overnight, decided to check the cat and cement those door shims in. That’s done, CAT lookied ok, just 1 honeycomb grid bar fell out when I removed it. Guess I should get a backup.

Stove back up and running with some wrapping paper, splitter slash and some maple. I left the ship electric heater on, so it’s still 45 in here; about 16 outside.
